Interval Training for Runners at Dowd Y

Our Y's here in the Charlotte area are terrific. Here is one of the many programs they offer. Registration began Aug 1st so don't delay and sign-up now.

High Intensity Interval training (HIIT) has proven to be the most time efficient method of training. Performing regular HIIT increases your "lactate threshold" which translates into being able to run faster at the same intensity level. In addition, interval training has the added benefit of increasing your resting metabolic rate for up to 12 hrs after you finish the workout. Bottomline is that you burn more calories/hr post-workout than you would by doing a moderate intensity workout of the same duration! This is a great way to burn more fat without having to drastically decrease your calorie consumption.

The purpose of this program will be to help introduce interval training into your running program or help you find new ideas for workouts if you have already been training this way. We will focus on how to structure an interval workout which will you help you get faster at any distance from 5K to full marathon. The program will feature several types of workouts with both track and hill intervals. We will also do assessments at the beginning and end of the program to measure progress.

This is the perfect program if you have some fall races on the calendar! This program is designed for distance runners and triathletes. This is NOT a beginning running program. Runners must be able to run at least 3 miles continuously.
