Masters Smackdown

In the Summer Breeze 5k, CRC is entering a Mixed Masters team - the 5 fastest times count. We thought there would be separate men's and women's masters teams, and these people signed up:
Gordon Bynum, Butch Holt, Michael Lemmons, Allen Strickland, Clayton Venhuizen
Dianne Allen, Beth Carey, Eimear Goggin, Kathy Rink, Deb Rubinich
To add some excitement to my bland existence, here's a challenge to the men's masters - I bet the average # of Grand Prix points earned by these masters women is higher than the average for the men. The winning team gets bragging rights, or BEER, or Credit in Heaven (I guess you need an Irish Catholic upbringing for that to work, though ... )
So, there's my challenge ... of course if the guys are scared to take it on, that's perfectly understandable ...

New Summer Schedule for the Charlotte Kids Running Club

We hope to encourage kids in the Charlotte community to lead a healthy lifestyle - by being active, setting goals and encouraging one another. Charlotte Running Club has its own Kids' Section - it doesn't matter if you are a beginner or have already run a 5k, all ages and abilities are welcome!

Look for the Charlotte Kids Running Club on facebook and request to join (with your name and your child/children's name; or show up at a run and ask Rebecca to add you.

New summer schedule: meet Mondays at 9:30 am at Latta Park. The kids run on a marked and monitored course. and after, if they want, they can stay and play in the splash ground - so they should bring a towel if they want to stay and splash! Also, the ice-cream truck comes at 10:30, so if they want a frosty treat, they should bring a dollar or two.

Charlotte dominates Running Journal Grand Prix Series

The Charlotte Running Community did fantastic in the Running Journal Grand Prix series (http://running.net) that just ended this past Monday (Memorial Day) in Huntsville, Alabama.

The RJ GP is a series of ten races held throughout several Southeast states and all runners who live in those states are eligible for the GP. There are three races in NC (Charlotte Racefest 10k, Southpark Turkey Trot, and Asheville Citizen-Times Half Marathon), two in South Carolina (Myrtle Beach Half Marathon and Midnight Flight 10k in Anderson), one in Tennessee (Germantown Half Marathon in Memphis), one in Florida (Gate River Run 15k), and three in Alabama (Rocket City Marathon and Vulcan Run 10k in Birmingham and the Cotton Row Run 10k in Huntsville).

Only the top 8 runners in each age group receive points in each race, and for overall only the top 20 runners (M/F) in each race receive points. Here's a link where you can get a better idea of how points are counted:
http://running.net/grand-prix-xxxiii-rules

We had 7 winners from the Charlotte area this year including the top 2 overall male and female (Alejandro Arreola and Alice Rogers). This is the 33rd year of the RJ Grand Prix.

Here are the other Charlotte area winners for this year:
Richard Hefner -- 1st place, 55-59 age group
Jerry Sofley -- 1st place, 60-64 age group
Bob Heck -- 2nd place, 40-44 age group
Bob Nelson -- 2nd place, 55-59 age group
Margaret Hagerty -- 1st place overall Veteran Female
